KESB - Protective authority

The Child and Adult Protection Authority (KESB) has the statutory task of ensuring the protection of children and adults at risk. If necessary, parents are supported in the care and upbringing of their children. In the case of adults, it is a matter of protecting people in a situation of danger who need assistance.

The KESB Region Visp is responsible for all first-instance decisions in child and adult protection. It investigates reports of danger and, if necessary, orders a child or adult protection measure. The KESB is in close contact with professional and private guardians, with the Social Medical Centre Upper Valais SMZO, the Centre for Child and Adolescent Development and Therapy ZET and the Office for Child Protection.

Parental care

The KESB Region Visp is responsible for examining and approving joint parental custody, regulating maintenance for children of unmarried parents, regulating education credits and establishing paternity.

Child protection

If the child is at risk and the parents are unable to improve the situation, the KESB takes the necessary child protection measures. It must always choose the mildest measure that best protects the child in the situation. As a rule, the KESB hears the parents and the child before taking a decision. The aim of the measure is to safeguard or restore the best interests of the child. It is intended to support and supplement the parents' abilities. The KESB always seeks a solution together with the parents.

Adult protection - guardianships

If the KESB orders an official measure, it shall appoint a person as guardian who appears to be personally and professionally suitable for the intended tasks. This can be a professional guardian or a private mandated person. The KESB Visp supports and accompanies people within the framework of a guardianship.

Rights of representation

The KESB Visp is responsible for examining and interpreting advance directives and living wills. An advance directive specifies who is to represent you in personal, financial or legal matters if you become incapacitated. With a living will you regulate your medical treatment in such a situation.
