Collection and Transport of Waste and All Types of Recyclables
Not everything belongs in landfill. Many materials can be recycled and reused, others must be disposed of specifically to prevent damage to people and the environment.
Disposing of waste properly
The Municipality of Visp provides a comprehensive waste disposal service. So that disposal functions smoothly, the municipality relies on the assistance of residents.
Waste inspections and fines are increasing
Recently the municipality has increasingly noted that waste is being sorted or disposed of incorrectly.
Please note:
In the Municipality of Visp, only garden cuttings are considered to be green waste. Food and kitchen waste must be disposed of in the garbage bags.
So that wheelie bins for household waste, paper / carton and green waste can be emptied by the garbage truck, the waste must be placed into standard containers of 140 or 240 litres.
A Common Solution for Waste Management in the Upper Valais.
The Municipal Association for Waste Management in the Upper Valais is the umbrella organisation of several Upper Valais municipalities – including Visp – for environmentally friendly waste disposal. The organisation’s activities aim to: avoid, minimise, recycle and dispose of waste in an environmentally friendly manner. It thus supports the introduction of user-pays fees and the recycling of materials.
Sorting Waste Properly
General waste is collected on Mondays and Thursdays.
Prepaid garbage bags should be put out preferably on the day of collection, or no earlier than 17.00 of the evening before.
No waste is collected on official public holidays.
Recycling Depots
Office, telecommunication and IT devices, entertainment devices, small and large household appliances, electrical devices, lamps and lights can be brought to the recycling depot once per year. Further details are provided in the current waste calendar.
Green Waste Disposal for Garden Cuttings
Wood cuttings, shrubberies, Christmas trees, branches, leaves, lawn cuttings and garden waste are collected from the usual waste collection point by the road. March to November every Friday, from 07:30. From December to February, this occurs every second Friday (for dates, see "VAZ").
Kitchen Waste
For food waste, household groups have the opportunity to conclude individual agreements with ERTAG AG (027 924 14 11) (collection by ERTAG AG in containers labelled with the name of the housing group, disposal at the Max Stalder biogas plant in Visp, seals can be obtained without charge at the Municipality of Visp.
Paper Collection
Newspapers, inserts, magazines, brochures, prospectuses, letters, recycled paper, computer lists, note paper, telephone directories, unbound books, catalogues and photocopies can be bundled with string and placed at the usual waste collection point. Papers are collected at regular intervals on Saturday mornings. The dates can be found in the waste calendar. Please do not place the bundles out before 17.00 of the evening before the collection.
Carrier bags, sacks and boxes may not be used as these are made from non-recyclable materials.

Carton Collection
Corrugated cardboard (without plastic adhesive strips), egg cartons, fruit and vegetable cartons (without plastic adhesive strips) and cartons. Cut open, press flat and tie with the official cardboard string for the Municipality of Visp (can be bought at Coop Visp/Eyholz, Migros) in a crosswise manner. Carton is collected each Wednesday from 09.00.
What does not go into the carton collection? Paper, milk and Tetra packs, filling materials, plastics such as Sagex, etc. must all be disposed of in the general waste.
The following breaches of the waste regulation will be prosecuted strictly
- Use of incorrect garbage bags, containers, etc.
- Putting out bags and waste too early
- Illegally leaving waste at public collection points
- Carton bundled with the incorrect string and/or non-crosswise
- Improper disposal of household waste in public waste bins
- Improper placement of waste on market days
